Biometric Facial Recognition for VAT and PAYE Registration — What You Need to Know

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has taken another big step toward strengthening the security of its online systems by introducing biometric facial recognition for VAT and PAYE registrations on eFiling.

This new feature is part of SARS’ ongoing effort to protect taxpayer identities, reduce fraud, and ensure safer access to its digital services.

What Has Changed

If you’re registering for VAT or PAYE on eFiling, you may now be asked to complete a facial verification step as part of the process.
This means SARS will use biometric facial recognition to confirm that you are who you say you are before granting access or completing your registration.

This also applies when you’re updating your security contact details, especially if you can’t receive a One-Time Pin (OTP).

How It Works

The process is simple and user-friendly:

1.Make sure you have a camera-enabled device such as a smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions on eFiling to position your face correctly.

3. Once the scan is complete and verified, you’ll be able to finish your registration or update your contact details.

If the facial verification fails, SARS will automatically create a verification case and may ask you to submit supporting documents to confirm your identity.

No Camera? No Problem

If you don’t have access to a camera-enabled device, SARS has made it possible for you to book an appointment at a SARS branch for in-person assistance.

This ensures that every taxpayer, regardless of their technology access, can still register securely and efficiently.

Why This Matters

Identity theft and tax fraud are on the rise. With this biometric feature, SARS is taking proactive steps to:

  • Prevent unauthorised access to taxpayer profiles

  • Strengthen online security

  • Ensure compliance processes are safer for both individuals and businesses

For business owners, this means added peace of mind when handling VAT and PAYE registrations online.

Our Advice for Taxpayers

If you’re planning to register for VAT or PAYE soon:

  • Make sure your camera-enabled device is working properly.

  • Ensure you have good lighting when completing facial verification.

  • Keep your ID document close by, in case additional verification is needed.

At The Tax Shop Alberton, we’re here to help guide you through these changes and make sure your registrations are handled smoothly and correctly.
